Reflection for june 13

Spiritual growth happens incrementally based on what we choose to root ourselves in. Small influences quietly take root in our lives and shape our direction over time, meaning we must intentionally choose how we spend our time and what we allow to form us. Reading Scripture helps form us and gives us wisdom. During seasons of crisis (like the pandemic), constant media noise and fear can easily crowd out prayer and Scripture, shifting our focus away from God. We have to actively choose to turn off that noise which is not easy to do.

Consider the dandelion: its small seeds spread undetected across a yard, cutting through thick turf and causing major issues for those with allergies. In the same way, small distractions quietly take root in our lives, gradually becoming a habit for us. Conversely, Psalm 1 points us toward a different kind of growth. Like trees in a forest that share water and support one another through interconnected root systems, our spiritual resilience relies heavily on who we are connected to. We are meant to stay rooted in God and deeply interconnected with a supportive faith community.

Because we are all constantly growing, we must choose to anchor ourselves deeply in God’s Word and His presence rather than the distractions around us. We can cultivate this daily rhythm through a simple breath prayer. Slow down, take joy in the moment, and recognize God's presence with this practice:

Inhale: "The Lord is my shepherd" (Reflecting on His leadership, protection, and care).

Exhale: "I have all I need" (Releasing anxiety and resting in God).

By anchoring our roots deep in Him, we allow a faithful God to keep growing us from the inside out. May God be with you and your supportive faith community this summer (and always)!
