What Are You Thankful For?

What Are You Thankful For?

What are you thankful for? I know this is a difficult time to ask that question. Pastor Bryan asked it in a slightly different way in his sermon on April 5. He asked us to think about what the most important things are for us. His theme was for us to change our perspective.

My mom recently emailed me and was complaining about how some things were going for her while locked down in her retirement facility. I responded by saying that everyone was going through this, and she was in a good place for them to take care of her. She sent an email to a group of friends at church asking them what they are thankful for. I decided I would send out an email to a few people I work with at church to find out what they were thankful for, too.

I loved the responses from everyone as they have found new ways to connect with others and are thinking positively about what this new way of life is for them and their families. Here are some of the responses:

  • I am thankful for the love and concern people are showing to each other. So many people are much friendlier to everyone. I notice this on my solitary walks in my neighborhood - everyone greets one another (from a distance).

  • I am thankful for technology.  Can you imagine doing this with just a TV and an analog phone?  God gifted the dreamers, inventors and even the exploiters so that the networks, smart phones, computers, webcams and social media were there when we needed them.

  • I am thankful that I have Faith that sustains me during this time…and that God has blessed my family and myself with health that seems to be keeping us safe during this virus…and so lucky and thankful for my Church family and staff that sustains us all.

  • I’m thankful for well-meaning people who are helping others even when they are at risk in doing so. For the front line first responders, nurses and physicians who work tirelessly in an environment where they are at risk.

  • I am so thankful for God's faithfulness and His presence.

  • I am grateful for many things.  During this time more than ever, there is peacefulness, no congestion, and no freeway rides or drives.

  • I am thankful for time to work in my garden. I am thankful for this slower pace and that I have time for long telephone calls with friends.

We are changing our perspective and reflecting how God is an agent of change in our lives. We are seeing new ways to connect with God and our faith family. We are helping others while helping ourselves. We are thankful even during this difficult time of being isolated. Love and hugs to all of you as you struggle to get through this week.
