A Gospel Trinity

A Gospel Trinity

One of the tenets of our Christian theology is that we worship a Triune God. This concept seems simple enough; we worship God our Creator, Jesus Christ our Savior, and the Holy Spirit our Advocate. But, has anyone ever asked you to explain the Trinity? I remember a past staff meeting when Pastor Mofid posed that question, and then went on to explain it.. I think most of us left with our heads spinning.

In worship on March 23rd, we are going to explore the meaning of and our relationship with the Trinity. Pastor Geoff’s Lenten series, “God Unfiltered,” delves into the nature of God. And, in true Holy Spirit fashion, the musical work I picked last summer for the season of Lent, “Gospel Trinity,” ties in to the theme.

“Gospel Trinity” is a four-movement work for SATB choir and orchestra composed by Rosephanye Powell. Dr. Powell is one of the most performed and published contemporary African-American female composers. Her upbringing in southern black churches is evident in her writing as she channels her grandmother calling on the Holy Spirit in the piece’s third movement. Dr. Powell has the ability to create a gospel-themed work that is singable and accessible to choirs and congregations alike.

Instead of presenting the work from top to bottom, each movement will be presented at the end of four sections of worship; God, Son, Holy Spirit, Trinity. In addition to a “Gospel Trinity” movement, sections will consist of a congregation hymn, scripture reading, message and prayer.

The choir has been working hard preparing, and even memorizing some of the music. We are looking forward to sharing this music with you all, and discovering how the Holy Spirit will be moving in the hearts of our congregation as we share this special worship experience.
